First Thursdays at Fire Opal
On August 2, 2007; 6 - 8 PM, Jamaica Plain will host the remarkable series of 1st Thursday's events.
Fire Opal's artists for this evening, will be local jeweler Ashley Jones and local collage painter Christina Murphy.

Artist Christina Murphy: My work is never planned, always spontaneous, intuitive, and flowing.  That is what I love about creating abstract work, you never know what you are about to capture.  Emotions, landscapes, people, dynamic experience, different parts of the world, and even stories can be portrayed within these pieces. That’s the beauty of it; everyone sees something different and feels something different when viewing the work. There is no definitive meaning behind any piece that I create; it takes on its own meaning when finished.
Similar to how a songwriter creates a song and how her audience listens to it, meaning is not universal or black and white. When people listen to a song or look at an abstract painting, there is a unique interpretation to be found and meaning to be made by each individual. There could be several truths to each piece and that is really what my work is all about.

Artist Ashley Jones:
When I was four years old I surprised myself by sculpting, out of blue Play-Doh, a seal balancing a ball on his nose. I could make what I imagined! I knew I would be an artist. I collected shards of glass, rocks, scraps of paper, foil candy wrappers, pencil shavings-- anything sparkley or colorful with potential for later use in Art. Painted in acrylic, watercolor, Krylon, or nail polish; Sculpted in clay, Fimo, paper-mache, wax, or plaster; Drawn in metallic colored pencil, Prismacolors, or icing; Stitched with a vehement distrust of any provided pattern...
Inspiration came in all forms, techniques were invented, household tools disappeared.
In high school I bought a blow torch, clean scrap silver, and a book. I've been experimenting with metals ever since.
