    • Although Schlueter has been producing jewelry for over 10 years, her college experience spanned the study of various aspects of textiles and fibers. Over the years she has been exploring ways to combine fiber and textile techniques into her sterling silver and 18K gold and silver bi-metal jewelry pieces. While continuing to use rivets (and no solder) and embossing fabric textures into the metal, which have been influential design elements in her work, she further embellishes the textured metals with fine silk using embroidery and crochet techniques.

    • My work is both organic and architectural, and is created from the visual fragments of a life of collecting images. I inspect the world in great detail and have always collected shells, seedpods, stones and interesting organic elements. My studio often resembles a laboratory with trays of specimens lined in rows. The walls and pages of my sketchbook are covered with myriad images of my world from nano-photography of plant life to the expansiveness of the Grand Canyon. In designing, making and living I see a strong relevance for the smallest things within the larger context; the seed that becomes a plant, the jewelry on the wearer, our planet within the universe. I use a variety of techniques in an effort to create pieces that are tactile and invoke in the wearer a sense of personal attachment.

There she discovered great fun and endless possibilities with three-dimensional materials. She learned how to work with wood, fiber, and metal. Transferring to a different school gave her the opportunity to meet another material: glass. Chihiro Makio completed a bachelor's fine art degree at the Massachusetts College of Art as a glass major with a minor in small metals/jewelry. Since then she has won several awards, including Saul Bell Design Awards from 2003 through 2007, and Niche Award in 2005.

A 1996 graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, I live and work in Rhode Island, sharing my studio with my dogs Zeke and Kato. Obsessed with the tactile world, I have amassed a collection of plant and tree segments, minerals, fungi, insects, skeletons, hives, and photographs of life ’both hidden and apparent. From these inspirations I create pieces that carry with them hints of these forms, textures, and moods. While I do love to make one-of-a-kind conceptual jewelry, my collection now predominantly consists of limited production pieces. I have realized the importance of both making a living and producing pieces that people can connect with, wear, and enjoy daily. I focus much of my attention on the circle. Rings and round elements inspire me with their continuity, simplicity, and strength. I love making rings ’the more textural the better. I do hope you enjoy!

      Handmade in New York, NY

    • For twenty years, Rina S. Young has designed and created jewelry, finding inspiration in the materials with which she works. Young is fascinated with the linear qualities of metal and the ability of metal to transform from generic solid object to individual form through the will of the imagination (and some well used tools). Interested in biology and natural processes, Young was inspired to translate the seeming randomness of nature into forms that speak about the world in which she lives. She found the perfect bridge in the symmetries of nature, which are the geometric building blocks upon which design is based.

Since 1993, she has explored translating the complex and balanced forms found in nature into small metal sculptures to be worn and to adorn. It is one of her favorite challenges...to see a beautiful flower or branch and to figure out how to recreate it in silver and gold. The results are whimsical, delicate pieces that imbue a classic elegance that will flatter those who wear them.
